Alright, let's talk about sealing up those windows. It's not the flashiest home improvement project, I get it, but it's one of the most important for keeping your energy bills down and your home comfortable. That's especially true with our Great Bend winds whipping through in the winter, or that brutal summer heat trying to sneak in. A good caulk and seal job really makes a difference.

If you're planning to tackle this, whether for a whole house or just a few problem spots, you'll want a clear picture of what's involved. Here's what I tell folks when they ask me about getting their windows sealed right.

Setting Your Project Timeline

First off, timing. You might think sealing is a quick fix, and sometimes it is! But for a whole-house project, you'll definitely want to plan ahead. Most professional crews, including mine at Guardian Window Installation, can finish a standard home's exterior window sealing in a day or two. This depends on how many windows you have, their condition, and how much prep work is needed, of course. If they're also doing interior sealing, add another day or so.

You've got to consider the weather too. You just can't apply caulk or sealant in freezing temperatures or pouring rain. It won't cure right, and you'll basically be throwing money away. Spring and fall are usually ideal around here – mild temperatures, less humidity. Summer can work, but try to avoid the hottest part of the day if possible; some sealants don't like extreme heat during application. If you're planning this for, say, October, start looking for contractors in August or September. The good ones get booked up fast, you know?

What to Expect During the Process

So, you've got a crew coming. What's going to happen? It's not rocket science, but there's a specific process to doing it correctly.

  • Inspection & Prep: They'll start by checking all your existing caulk. They're looking for cracks, gaps, and areas where it's pulled away from the frame or siding. Any old, failing caulk needs to come out. This is crucial! You can't just glob new stuff over old, bad stuff. It won't stick, and it won't seal. They'll scrape, cut, and clean the surfaces thoroughly. This might even take longer than the actual application.
  • Application: Once the surfaces are clean and dry, they'll apply the new sealant. A pro knows how to lay down a smooth, consistent bead that fills the gap completely. They'll use the right type of sealant for the job – exterior-grade, flexible, paintable if needed, and something that can stand up to our Kansas sun and cold.
  • Tooling: After application, they'll often
